Election Timetable
The various stages and processes attached to an election are set in legislation and the Returning Officer has very little control or discretion to change these in anyway. The below is the election timetable that must be followed and sets out when you are expected to complete your various tasks as a candidate and what you can expect from us in administering the election.

Notice of Election
The notice of election formally starts the election process.
Nomination papers can be delivered following the publication of this notice.
16 March 2022
Delivery of Nomination Papers
Nominations to stand for election can be submitted.
17 March 2022
Until 4pm on 5 April 2022
Close / Withdrawal of Nomination
Nominations for election cannot be submitted, withdrawn or amended
after this date. At this point we will know where an election will be held.
4pm 5 April 2022
Deadline to appoint Election Agents
If standing for the County Council and appointing an election agent,
this is the deadline to appoint someone to that role or you will become
your own election agent by default.

Statement of Persons Nominated
This notice will display all the names of people standing for election.
4pm 6 April 2022
Deadline for electors to register to vote
This is the last day electors can register on the electoral roll in order
to be registered in time for the election and able to vote. Residents can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote and will need their national insurance number and date of birth to complete the process.
14 April 2022
Deadline for electors to request, cancel or change a postal vote
Voters who cannot attend a polling station to vote must request a postal vote
no later than this deadline. Applications can be emailed to elections@monmouthshire.gov.uk
5pm 19 April 2022
Postal Votes Dispatched
Any elector who has requested to vote by post will be issued there ballot paper on this day. Voters can expect to receive their postal vote in the days following this.
20 April 2022
Deadline for electors to request a proxy vote
Voters who cannot attend a polling station or vote by post can appoint someone else to vote on their behalf no later than this deadline. Applications can be emailed to elections@monmouthshire.gov.uk.
5pm 26 April 2022
Deadline to appoint Counting and Polling Agents
Candidates are entitled to appoint agents to observe certain elements of the voting process for transparency. This is the deadline for giving notice to the Returning Officer of appointments for this election.

Postal Vote Openings
Between this day and polling various postal vote opening sessions will be held to verify the validity of votes that are returned by post.
27 April - 5 May 2022
Polling Day
This is the day voters will attend polling stations to vote in the elections. Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm.
5 May 2022
Counting of the Votes
The timing of the count is still to be confirmed but will either be immediately following the close of poll and through the night on the 5th May 2022 or will begin the following day.
6 May 2022
Deadline to submit Election Expenses - Town and Community Council
Each candidate standing for election is required to submit a set of election expense forms confirming that they did not exceed the spending limit as part of their campaign.

Deadline to submit Election Expenses - County Council
Each candidates standing for election is required to submit a set of election expense forms confirming that they did not exceed the spending limit as part of their campaign.

The Electoral Commission have produced detailed guidance on the various aspects and requirements of standing for election. Please note there are some differences between standing for a County Council and Community/Town Council and you should refer to the correct guidance for where you are seeking election.
